Thanks youse... This image was used across the USA for a campaign against poverty.
It was not made with that intention, it just spoke loud about the issue.
This is a cheap scan from a print not a neg.

It's a fun image. That shape on the right adds tension but I'm not sure if it's good or bad. Well, it can't be bad at any rate. I crop that edge off and the it's just another kid photo but with it there, it's more that that....
It's never easy to work with kids. It's to easy to just see it as a kid image. This isn't.

Talk about eye travel... What are you talking about shooter?

Ok...See the shape of the curb, left side...that repeats by the tree and shadow..then it repeats on her hood which bring the eye to the mailbox sporting the same shape.

See her hood...well that shape is repeated by the tree limbs all over including the background.....

theres a strange shape shadow from the top to just right of her....that repeats in the trees and her arms...
the bright leaves on the right side support the image and keep it from falling hard by the dark tree and.....

they are repeated by the leaves above her and to the left....

All this creates Eye Travel. Her head is at a perfect tension point on the visual map....
I would need a larger space to write more but this image is the perfect example of eye travel, the visual map, tension and shapes.
It works nice and reads very well.....

Certain images are more than just observations. They become stimulus for memories.
This image is a memory I never had but now can feel and share. Maybe that's part of the human condition. Maybe that's part of what makes photography so intoxicating.

We are all taught to see things as if for the first time. Maybe what's more important is to see things as if it's the last time.
This is one of those images.
