Embedded Photo Embedded Photo This is just a very short post to answer a question I have been getting a lot lately. Why do I think the SL3-S is better than the SL3-P? To be completely clear right off the bat, it is only better for my specific style of shooting, documentary work, street photography, and handheld low light capturing.

When Leica announced the high resolution SL camera line, the specs on paper immediately caught everyone's attention. High resolution sensors, updated autofocus algorithms, and peak performance figures sound incredible on a spec sheet. There are plenty of valid reasons to choose the high MP SL body like the SL3-P, which, let's be honest, is basically a fancy, re badged Panasonic underneath all that sleek German metal. If your daily work involves large format studio portraiture, heavy commercial cropping, or massive commercial prints, that extra resolution is a legitimate asset

For my style of photography, though, street work, documentary shooting, and low light handheld capturing, in my opinion the lower res of SL3-S is not just a secondary option. It is simply the better tool.

Why? You may ask ...

When you shoot street at night or work in low light environments, clean high ISO performance matters far more than resolving tiny details. The 24mp sensor on the SL3-S features physically larger pixels, allowing it to gather light with less noise amplification. When pushed to ISO 6400 or 12800 in dark alleys or dynamic street scenes, the SL3-S delivers cleaner files, richer dynamic range, and shadow detail that holds together without the digital noise.

What about the extra processing power or focus points of the SL3-P ???

It is easy to get caught up reading spec sheets that highlight the additional phase detection autofocus points or upgraded internal processing hardware. In actual field use, however, the difference between these cameras is negligible. Especially for my type of work.

When walking the street, locking onto a moving subject, or taking a quick portrait, the autofocus on the SL3-S is fast, reliable, and precise. In real world handheld shooting, you will not notice a practical performance gap in focus acquisition.

Battery life and efficiency

Smaller file sizes also translate directly to less sensor heat generation and reduced processing overhead per exposure. In the field, the SL3-S yields noticeably better battery life during long street walks compared to higher mp bodies that draw significantly more power pushing massive files through the image processor.

Handheld latitude and workflow speed

High mp sensors are notoriously unforgiving when shot handheld. Tiny vibrations from your hands or subtle movement while walking can easily soften critical focus at 100% resolution. I see this when shooting my M11. The 24MP sensor of the SL3-S is much more forgiving in real world handheld situations, allowing me to shoot with confidence without constantly worrying about shutter speed buffer limits.

Added to that is the sheer efficiency of the workflow. The 24MP DNG files clear the camera buffer quickly, ingest into software without lagging, and keep drive storage overhead manageable while traveling, all while preserving that unmistakable Leica color and 3D rendering.

Cost Savings. Put it into glass ...

Let's also talk about the financial reality, the SL3-S leaves a substantial chunk of cash in your pocket compared to the price tag of the SL3-P. That cost difference isn't just a minor savings—it is literally enough money to fund a prime lens, a second body backup, or an entire trip. Spending extra on megapixels you don't use makes zero sense when those funds can go directly into glass or actual shooting trips.

My final thoughts

Equipment choices always come down to intended purpose. If your photography demands extreme cropping or maximum studio detail, a higher res SL body like the SL3-P makes sense. But for documentary work, street photography, and dark ambient light where speed, handheld stability, cost efficiency, and ISO performance rule, the SL3-S remains the true sweet spot in the SL system.
