The 15th of August (dekapentavgoustos) is a peculiar and exceptional day for the Greeks. According to the Orthodox Ritual we celebrate the Dormition of Our Lady.
During those three days of August, in the metropolitan areas, everything nearly stops. This is the peak of desertion of the urban places during August. The few that stay back feel an endless loneliness and it shows. Directors like Pantelis Voulgaris, with his film "Quiet Days in August" (1991) and Costas Giannaris "15avgoustos" (2002) masterfully addressed the endless loneliness of August. The prisoners of the city pray for a miracle. In today's economic recession nearly everybody does. These are the days when monochrome prevails. To capture a congregation in absenteeism.
