It is an interesting one. I know exactly what you mean but prefer the wider angle as it accentuates the desolation that this poor family are suffering. To go closer might have lost that? Who knows? I certainly don't!

Very striking image - the light on his upturned face is beautifully rendered.

I think that closer would have taken away from the overall picture. By having the dark areas around I think the light works better. However, thats just me :) Regardless, this is superb!
